Waiving the Trump Card

Despite his widespread recognition as a business tycoon and expert, Donald Trump has now heard the other side of “You’re Fired.”

In recent weeks, the topic of Mr. Trump has continued to resurface, from discussions on ISIS, his bid for the GOP nomination, and, of course, his hair. However, none of these compare to the notoriety he is now receiving for his remarks regarding Mexican immigrants.

When Trump announced that he would run for the presidential nomination for 2016, his speech riled up the voters. While appealing to those interested in his business tactics and straightforward deal making, others found his words to be harsh, ignorant, and egotistical. Rather than begin encouraging Latino voters, Trump’s initial speech greatly antagonized them, insulting Mexicans, Latinos, and Americans alike.

While he can normally escape his loquacious nature unscathed, people are clearly not going to ignore him this time around. There has been widespread support of those siding against Trump and his businesses, calling him out for his ignorant words and insensitive behavior. Not only here in the US, but in Mexico as well, people and celebrities are quick to speak out against Mr. Trump.

Numerous celebrities have spoken out against Trump and his unfounded remarks, including Ricky Martin, America Ferrera, Shakira, Aaron Paul, and Eva Longoria. Former Mexican President Felipe Calderon joined the ranks of those who have had enough of Trump’s comments, and Carlos Slim, a Mexican telecom magnate, has decided to break off a shared project. Guillermo Rodriguez, a Mexican-born American, who works with Jimmy Kimmel, shared his views on Trump this past Wednesday, helping to bring a bit of humor to the commotion Trump stirred up.

While Mexico considers whether or not it will participate in this years Miss Universe Pageant, an organization that Trump co-owns, NBC decided to drop its coverage of the Miss USA Pageant, another organization of Mr. Trump’s. As the Pageant struggled to find another network to air their July 12th show, more backlash seemed to impede their progress. The entire lineup of performers for the event has all dropped out, including the popular Flo Rida. Of the four judges scheduled for the Pageant, only one remains, and both of the original co-hosts have backed out as well.

To make matters worse for Mr. Trump, Macy’s, a major department store chain, has ceased its current relationship with Trump. They are now stopping the sale of Trump’s clothing line, and are phasing out what is already in stock.

None of this bodes well for Mr. Trump and his now 10-day election campaign. Though “all publicity is good publicity,” it is safe to say that he would have been better off without it.
